Penalty Recordings Re-Launches as Penalty Entertainment with Multi-Year Deal with Sony RED
New York (January 16, 2014) – Penalty Entertainment, LLC today announced a new partnership with Sony RED for a multi-year distribution deal covering North America.
Launched in the early 90s, the NYC-based Penalty Recordings was originally a joint venture with then Tommy Boy/Warner Music and home to some of the biggest names in Hip-Hop music. The imprint went on to become one of the most respected and influential independent record companies of the 90s. Penalty’s moniker and revolutionary spirit was also manifested in the lyricists they signed such as Noreaga (NORE), CNN, Lord Finesse, The Beatnuts, J-Live, Crooked Lettaz (David Banner) and Skull Duggery with No Limit, in addition to the projects they initiated like the AND 1 Mixtape DVD series.
Now, two decades later in 2014, Founder/CEO Neil Levine has restored the brand under Penalty Entertainment and chosen Sony/Red as a distribution partner. Inclusive of recorded music, artist and producer management, music publishing, touring and merchandising, Penalty Entertainment is involved in every aspect of an artist’s career.
“We’re focused on artist development, talented new producers and musicians who will be here many years down the road. We want the superstars of tomorrow, today. We want to help develop them for successful careers that will produce generations of hip-hop fans,” explains Levine about partnering with Sony/Red. “I have a lot of respect for what RED has accomplished with their marketing divisions and I believe that Sony is the right partner on a global level. RED is a best in class company and I am really honored to be a part of that legacy.”
RED President Bob Morelli beams about the new partnership. “Neil Levine’s Penalty 2.0 joins RED’s fast growing Rap and Hip-Hop label groups (Cinematic, Ncredible, Louder Than Life, Infamous, Soul Temple) with a new roster that showcases the quality and consistency of the original. There is no doubt about Penalty’s plans to recapture the original excitement and Neil’s ability to deliver it. RED’s continued mission to find the best in Rap and Hip-Hop has been fulfilled with the addition of Penalty Entertainment and we are excited to begin the next chapter from this storied label.”
First releases from Penalty include Ft Lauderdale rapper Hi-Rez, EMC (Masta Ace, Punchline, Wordsworth and Strick) for Spring 2014 as well as a number of deals currently being negotiated.
